Automatic DNS updates

Microsoft's DNS has the ability to update, automatically, from other servers on the network. Microsoft's DHCP servers know how to update the DNS servers with the addresses they have distributed to the stations - thus keeping the DNS server's database always correct.

In order to configure the automatic updates option on the DNS server, you must open the DNS management tool (via Administrative Tools) and enter the Zone properties. Inside the General tab, there is the "Allow Dynamic Updates" field.

In this field there are three options:

  • No - the server will not receive updates.
  • Yes - the server will always receive automatic updates.
  • Only Secure Updates - the server will take updates only from servers that are members of the domain.

Stations 2000 and above, by default, are registered by themselves in DNS, without needing to be registered via DHCP.
To cancel this, you must enter the network properties in the station, and select the properties of the TCP/IP protocol.

Clicking on the Advanced button will open a window in which the DNS tab must be selected. Unchecking register this connections address in DNS will stop the station from automatically updating the DNS server.
