How do I reduce the space between the icons on my desktop?

You can decrease the space between the icons vertically and horizontally. All you have to do is right-click on an empty space on the desktop, select the "Properties" option and click "Appearance". In the "item" line, you can select the option "space between symbols" and change the size as needed.
